Edward Gates

Edward Gates was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, April 23, 1950. He has an MA (history) from the University of New Brunswick and a BED from Saint Thomas University. He taught school in northern Saskatchewan for three years. He is a blueberry farmer, karate instructor and poet living in Belleisle Creek, NB, with his wife Dorina Gates and their three children. He has won several writing competitions and has had over one hundred and forty poems published in four anthologies and over thirty-five journals in Canada, the United States and Britain. His wife illustrates his work.

Writing Philosophy

Gates uses a variety of forms but favors the ghazal, usually with a minimum of five couplets and an intuitive or psychic leap between couplets. This form demands an economy of line, exactness of image and use of everyday speech; a pause or space often more meaningful than the words or phrases they separate.

Gates’ poems are revelations of the familiar. They break free of the straight jacket of custom and convention, favoring common sense over abstraction and generalization. Gates, a farmer, who grows and harvests blueberries, eschews comforts of the “material” world for hardships of living close to earth, where survival depends on the weather, the proper use of technology and ultimately, staying focused and healthy .

COMMENTS ABOUT EDWARD GATES’ WORK:

Robert Gibbs: “These ghazals strike me as very strong. They are finely crafted and I believe they are genuine and true to their author.”

Thomas Smith: “Edward Gates deepens the method of John Thompson’s ghazals to chronicle the tensions ands rewards of a contemporary life lived close to the earth. These poems are full of the difficulty of intransigent machines and hearts in a harsh northern climate.”

Erin Moure: “The pieces grasp at but elude description…there is a gentle, wild beauty here.”

Kimberly Gautreau: “A humble poet, speaking in straight-forward terms about his life as a blueberry farmer, the simplicity of the beauty of nature….very refreshing…”

Yvonne Trainer: “The visual and written are all part of the overall fabric of this collection. Heart’s Cupboard is a “beautiful” work of art that reads like jazz music.”
